The Nigerian-American Football Association (NAFA) has officially presented its competition uniform to the National Sports Commission (NSC) as the team gears up for the inaugural IFAF Africa Flag Football Continental Games in Egypt.
Led by its President, Babajide Akeredolu, the Nigerian squad is set to face formidable opponents, including Morocco, Tunisia, South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Uganda, and host nation Egypt.
On Tuesday, Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC, urged the team to make the nation proud and bring home a historic victory.
“I wish you guys well and I am more encouraged that you guys are very confident that our women team will win Gold,” Persecondnews quotes Olopade as saying.
He also commended NAFA for its aggressive publicity and glamour surrounding flag football in Nigeria, noting that a synergy between NAFA and Showtimes could lead to a robust league across the country.
Akeredolu explained that the tournament is a significant step towards Africa’s representation on the global stage, particularly since flag sports became an Olympic sport.
“We came here to unveil our jersey to the DG and tell him that we are fielding three teams for the competition – the main team, a female team, and an U13 team,” he said.
Akeredolu expressed optimism about the team’s chances, citing the support of various leagues in Nigeria, including the Abuja Flag Football League and the Showtime League.
The tournament, scheduled to hold from June 20 to June 21, promises to be an exciting event, with Nigeria’s teams looking to make a mark on the continental stage.
