The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has officially inaugurated a new 1×7.5MVA 33kV/11kV distribution injection substation at Borno State University.
This vital infrastructure aims to significantly improve electricity access for the university and surrounding communities.
The facility was formally inaugurated on Sunday, June 8, 2025, by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who also chairs the board of NDPHC. The commissioning was part of the Eid celebrations in the state.
Constructed as part of NDPHC’s Distribution Intervention Projects, the substation includes a 1×7.5MVA injection substation, 3km of 33kV transmission line, 2.5km of 11kV distribution line, 2.5km of low-tension (LT) line, and three 500KVA distribution transformers.
Vice President Shettima emphasized that the project is a crucial element of the Federal Government’s commitment to power sector reforms, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
“This commissioning reflects our dedication to improving access to stable electricity, especially in vulnerable and underserved communities,” Shettima said. “It aligns with our strategic goal of universal electricity access across Nigeria.”
Also speaking at the event, the Managing Director/CEO of NDPHC, Engr. Jennifer Adighije, highlighted the company’s role in bridging infrastructure deficits across the electricity value chain.
“This substation is more than an infrastructure project—it is a critical milestone in our effort to ensure that quality, uninterrupted electricity reaches end users,” she said.
“It will be managed by the local distribution company, who will take over immediately.”
Adighije reaffirmed NDPHC’s alignment with national energy goals, emphasizing the project’s contribution to energy equity and economic empowerment in Borno.
On the technical significance, Engr. Bello Babayo, NDPHC’s Executive Director, Networks, said the project would enable evacuation of up to 6 megawatts of power to the area, ensuring stability and efficiency in supply.
“This development will provide reliable power to Borno State University and nearby clusters, supporting learning, commerce, and small-scale industries,” he noted.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of Yola Electricity Distribution Company, Mr. Abdulrahman Isa, expressed appreciation to NDPHC and the Federal Government for the intervention.
“This facility will dramatically improve our ability to deliver efficient power services to our customers in this zone. NDPHC has remained a reliable partner in strengthening our grid and operational capacity,” he said.
