The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a thorough investigation into the tragic deaths of 22 athletes, journalists, and sports administrators from Kano State.
The victims died in a lone road accident while returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State which ended on March 30.
The NLC extended its condolences to the government and people of Kano State following the incident.
In a statement released on Thursday by Benson Upah, Head of Information and Public Affairs, NLC Acting President Audu T. Amba offered his sympathies to the families and friends of the deceased, describing the event as a “cruel reality.”
“The NLC is demanding a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“While we pray for the repose of their souls, we demand for a thorough investigation… Investigation should go all the way to the source of take-off… immediate and possibly, remote causes,” the statement reads.

The NLC said the investigation into the tragic accident should thoroughly examine potential causes such as technical failure, driver fatigue, and reckless driving.
It also urged that key individuals, including the transport officer and other drivers, be questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
This incident has sent shockwaves across the country, underscoring the critical need for improved road safety measures and comprehensive accident investigations to determine their causes and prevent future occurrences.
