An aviation scare occurred on Friday afternoon at Ilorin International Airport when a Diamond training aircraft from the Aviation Training School crash-landed during a high-risk training exercise.

The incident, which occurred around 4:00 PM on Thursday, sent shockwaves through the aviation community.

Eyewitnesses and staff reported that the aircraft was performing a simulated instrument approach, a complex maneuver where pilots navigate solely by instruments, often using special goggles or IFR hoods to simulate restricted visibility.

The plane suddenly veered off Runway 05, skidding uncontrollably before coming to a frightening halt on the grass verge.

Both occupants on board sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital amid frantic emergency response efforts.

No fatalities were, however, reported.

As of this report, the condition of the injured remains undisclosed, causing anxiety among families and aviation circles.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) swiftly dispatched an elite Go-Team from Abuja to Ilorin to lead a full-scale investigation. Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs, stated that investigators would meticulously examine the crash site, collect crucial evidence, interview witnesses, and analyze operational data to determine the cause of the mishap.

Captain Alex Badeh, NSIB’s Director General, expressed grave concern but commended the swift medical response.

He emphasized, “Every accident is a harsh reminder — and a vital opportunity — to bolster aviation safety. We are determined to leave no stone unturned in our quest for answers.”

Authorities have urged the public and media to refrain from speculation and await official updates as the investigation progresses.
