Edo State got off to a flying start in the men’s cricket tournament, thrashing Delta State by 8 wickets in the opening match at the MKO Abiola Stadium on Tuesday in the ongoing National Sports Festival.
In a match played under clear skies, Edo State showcased their all-around dominance, earning a decisive victory.
Despite winning the toss and choosing to bat, Delta State couldn’t establish a rhythm against Edo’s highly disciplined bowling.
The Edo bowlers maintained exceptional control, consistently applying pressure with tight lines, which ultimately forced errors and limited Delta’s scoring ability.
Delta State were bowled out for 71 runs in 19.5 overs.
“We knew we had to bowl well to restrict Delta State to a low score, and our bowlers delivered,” said an Edo State team official.
“We were confident that our batting line-up would chase down the target with ease.”
In pursuit of a modest target of 72, Edo State’s batters came out with intent and purpose.
The openers set the tone, laying a strong foundation before the middle order calmly steered the team home.
Edo State reached the target comfortably, finishing at 73/2 in just 10.2 overs.
“It was a comprehensive performance from our team,” said the Edo State captain.
“We bowled well, fielded well, and our batting line-up did the rest. We’re happy with the win, and we’re looking forward to the next match.”
The win was a testament to Edo State’s clinical approach, marked by sharp fielding, intelligent bowling, and confident batting.
For Delta State, it’s a wake-up call and an opportunity to regroup and bounce back stronger in their next game.
With this emphatic victory, Edo State have laid down a strong marker and will look to carrying this momentum into the rest of their matches.
The team will be keen to build on this performance and make a strong bid for the tournament title.
