Cross River State has surged to an early lead on the medals table at the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, following a dominant performance on day two.

The state’s success was spearheaded by its weightlifting team at the City’s Sports Centre.

Persecondnews reports that King Kalu Ufiem was a standout, securing three gold medals in the 54kg male event across the snatch, clean and jerk, and total categories.

This exceptional showing propelled Cross River to the top of the overall standings.

Other states also made their mark in weightlifting.

Bayelsa’s Nnadozie Elvis Elechi earned two silver and one bronze medal, while an Oyo athlete secured a silver. Ekiti also claimed a bronze.

Meanwhile, logistical issues with the hockey federation’s technical crew caused the postponement of the female hockey match between Team Delta and Plateau State.

Originally slated for Monday at the Ijebu-Ode stadium, the game has been rescheduled for today.

Kicking off on Sunday, the sports festival  is set to deliver thrilling competition as athletes from across the country vie for glory.

Beyond the medals, the festival highlights Nigeria’s rich sporting prowess and reinforces national unity.

The big question remains: which state will emerge victorious?
