Emergency Rule: Wike, Suspended Rivers Lawmakers Hold Strategic Meeting in UK

217

Aftermath of emergency rule in Rivers State, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike and the suspended members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have travelled outside the country for a strategic meeting.

Wike hosted the suspended lawmakers to a dinner in the United Kingdom after
an earlier meeting with some of his political allies in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on Sunday.

The meeting was confirmed by the minister’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, via his Facebook page.

Olayinka said: “Yesterday, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, hosted Rivers State House of Assembly members who are in the United Kingdom for Legislative Capacity Building, to a dinner.

“Wike left Nigeria on Sunday night after visiting his political friends and associates in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.”

Persecondnews recalls that the lawmakers were suspended by President Bola Tinubu after declaring a state of emergency in the state over alleged security concerns.

The emergency rule saw the suspension of Gov. Siminalayi Fubara and the lawmakers for six months.

The intractable political crisis between Wike and Fubara, his estranged political god son, had triggered instability and tension in the state.

The Supreme Court had in a ruling ordered the reinstatement of the lawmakers and directed the governor to present the 2024 budget before the Martins Amaewhule-led Assembly.

However, Fubara’s attempt to present the budget was frustrated by the lawmakers, who shut the gate to the Assembly complex against him and his entourage.

The suspended lawmakers are currently in the UK for a legislative capacity-building programme but could not be ascertained if it was state sponsored.
