Nigeria’s U-17 women’s football team, the Flamingos, have advanced to the final round of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers after defeating South Africa 2-0 in the return leg of the second round.

The team sealed a 5-1 aggregate victory over their opponents, having won the first leg 3-1 in Pretoria a week ago.

The Flamingos dominated the match from the start, creating several half-chances that were easily dealt with by the South African goalkeeper.

However, they finally broke through in the 37th minute when Harmony Chidi, the team’s top marksman, scored with a well-placed header from a free-kick.

The South Africans improved after the break but were unable to capitalize on their chances.

The Flamingos made them pay in the 56th minute when Aishat Animashaun scored with a 20-yard chipped shot, securing a 2-0 win and a spot in the final round of qualifying.

The Flamingos will next face either Algeria or Botswana in the third and final round of qualifying for the FIFA 2025 U-17 Women’s World Cup, scheduled for Morocco from October 17 to November 8.

With their impressive performance, the team is one step closer to securing a spot in the prestigious tournament.
