Following years of persistent power shortages and frequent national grid collapses, the Transmission Company of Nigeria(TCN) said power generation peaked at 5,713.60 megawatts on Tuesday, marking the highest output in four years.

TCN, in a statement it released on Tuesday, said the power sector achieved a new peak generation record for the year 2025, with the increased power supply successfully transmitted nationwide.

According to the statement, the new peak generation was achieved on Tuesday, surpassing the previous record of 5,543MW set on February 14.

The statement reads: “This was recorded on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 21:30 hours, with the new generation peak of 5,713.60 megawatts (MW), surpassing the previous peak generation of 5,543.20MW achieved on February 14, 2025, by 170.40 MW.”

It said while the new peak of 5,713.60MW is 88MW shy of the all-time record of 5,801.60MW achieved on March 1, 2021, it still represents a significant accomplishment.

The statement added: “Furthermore, a new record for the maximum daily energy ever attained in the history of the electricity industry in Nigeria was also set yesterday, with a total of 125,542.06 megawatt-hours (MWh).

“This surpasses the previous record of 125,159.48MWh achieved on February 14, 2025, by 382.58 MWh.”

Persecondnews recalls that the Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, promised Nigerians on November 14, 2024, that power generation would increase to 6,000MW by December 2024.

Unfortunately, the target was not met due to persistent challenges such as vandalism, frequent grid collapses, and the country’s inadequate power infrastructure.

In 2024 alone, the national grid collapsed up to 12 times, leading to widespread blackouts, affecting millions of Nigerians and causing significant economic losses.

The root causes of the collapses are complex, but experts point to aging infrastructure, under investment in the power sector, and poor maintenance as major factors.
