MTN Nigeria, a leading telecommunications provider, has raised its data prices, sparking reactions from customers.

The company confirmed the price adjustments in a response shared on its X (formerly Twitter) account.

“Y’ello! Thanks for stopping by. We apologise for any inconvenience and delayed response. A price increase has been implemented to enhance our services and serve you better, which is why you are seeing the updated amount,” MTN stated.

This development follows the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) approval of a tariff increase for telecom operators, citing prevailing market conditions.

Reuben Mouka, the NCC spokesperson, announced the decision in January, explaining that it aligns with the commission’s regulatory authority under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.

According to Mouka, the new regulation permits a maximum tariff increase of 50 per cent, a compromise from the over 100 per cent hike initially requested by some network operators.

“The adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50 per cent of current tariffs, though lower than the over 100 per cent requested by some network operators, was arrived at taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability,” Mouka stated.

Despite this cap, an analysis of MTN’s revised pricing structure reveals a sharp increase in data bundle costs, in some cases exceeding 200 per cent.
