In a shocking turn of events, Plymouth Argyle, the bottom club in the English Championship, pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory over Liverpool, the top team in the English Premier League (EPL), in their FA Cup fourth-round encounter at Home Park on Sunday.
The win marked only the second time in three months that Plymouth Argyle has tasted victory.
Despite dominating possession in the early stages, Liverpool struggled to create clear-cut chances, with their first real opportunity coming after the half-hour mark when James McConnell’s shot was saved.
The first half ended with little action, but Plymouth Argyle came out strong in the second period, winning a penalty kick minutes after a blocked chance on the edge of the area.
Ryan Hardie converted the penalty kick on 57 minutes, sending Caoimhin Kelleher the wrong way to give Plymouth Argyle a 1-0 lead.
The hosts almost doubled their advantage, but Kelleher pushed Hardie’s effort onto the post, and Callum Wright blazed wide from the resultant corner kick.
Liverpool poured forward in search of an equalizer, camping in Plymouth’s half and creating chances through Darwin Nunez and Kelleher.
However, the hosts held firm, claiming a historic victory that marked only the first time in seven years that a side top of the EPL has lost to a club outside the top flight.
