In a stunning operation, Ghana’s National Security has seized a large, unspecified amount of US dollars and Ghana Cedis, including counterfeits, hidden in twelve 20-ft shipping containers in Sapeiman, near Amasaman.
The containers were tracked to a warehouse in the Ga South Municipality, where a special operation was conducted following a tip-off.
The cleverly concealed currency, mostly bundles of US dollars, was found in wooden boxes filled with cement, while other boxes revealed additional currencies stashed in boxes barricaded with plywood and sealed with charcoal.
The bust has triggered a nationwide manhunt for four key suspects, including a notorious ringleader known only as “Alhaji”.
Investigators believe the sophisticated concealment methods suggest a well-organized criminal syndicate with extensive smuggling and money-laundering operations.
Two of the suspected twelve containers remain unaccounted for, but National Security officials have deployed state security trackers to locate them.
The operation has also raised concerns about the potential for fraudulent military impersonation, as security operatives discovered counterfeit Ghana Army uniforms and boots inside the warehouse.
Authorities have launched a nationwide manhunt for the key suspects, with security forces determined to dismantle what they suspect to be a major financial crime network.
As investigations continue, the seizure is expected to expose deeper layers of illegal activity, with officials warning that more arrests could follow.
This latest bust highlights the growing threat of financial fraud and smuggling in Ghana, with potential consequences for investor confidence, economic stability, and national security.
