A violent clash erupted at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, disrupting a meeting of the party’s board of trustees (BoT).

The chaos started when Sunday Ude-Okoye, a prominent party leader, was barred from entering the meeting, triggering a heated confrontation between his supporters and those of Samuel Anyanwu.

Anyanwu, the rival claimant to the national secretary position, has been at the centre of a dispute with Ude-Okoye, which recently led to police intervention at the party’s national headquarters.

The PDP has been embroiled in a fresh leadership crisis, with both Ude-Okoye and Anyanwu laying claim to the national secretary position.

The crisis deepened in December 2024, when the court of appeal ruled in favour of Ude-Okoye, only for Anyanwu to appeal the judgment and file for a stay of execution at the Supreme Court.

Eyewitnesses report that Ude-Okoye’s supporters scaled the fence into the secretariat premises, overpowering security personnel and Anyanwu’s aides.

Persecondnews reports that the situation was eventually brought under control, but not before the party’s secretariat was left in disarray.

Ude-Okoye is currently outside the BoT meeting hall with his supporters, while security has been beefed up at the PDP headquarters to maintain order.

The clash highlights the deepening divisions within the PDP, which has struggled to maintain a united front in the face of internal power struggles.
