The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command faced a tragic year in 2024, with 140 operatives losing their lives in the line of duty.
Despite this loss, the command achieved significant successes in recovering stolen funds and property.
On a positive note, their efforts led to the recovery of ₦409 million from various criminal operations throughout the year.
A breakdown of the recovered funds reveals that the command retrieved substantial amounts from different types of criminal suspects. These include:
– ₦36 million from kidnapping suspects
– ₦68 million from armed robbery suspects
– ₦19 million from burglary cases
– ₦285 million from fraud cases
The command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, released these figures to the press, highlighting the command’s commitment to combating crime and recovering stolen assets.
According to Adeh, the Command recorded a total of 1,426 reported cases in 2024, resulting in the arrest of 1,077 suspects.
Fraud cases topped the list with 385 reported incidents and 422 suspects arrested, followed closely by armed robbery with 268 cases and 132 arrests.
Rounding out the top five crimes were one-chance robbery, car theft, and kidnapping, with 263, 127, and 104 reported cases, respectively, and corresponding arrests of 71, 64, and 216 suspects.
The report highlighted notable recoveries, including 376 firearms, 13 AK-47 magazines, and 187 rounds of live ammunition.
In terms of prosecution, the command reported that 38 kidnap suspects were charged, resulting in 21 convictions, demonstrating the command’s commitment to justice.
The scorecard stated: “For cybercrime, 32 cases were reported, and 15 suspects were arrested.
“For homicide, 68 cases were reported, leading to 78 arrests. Burglary saw 73 cases, with 20 suspects arrested, while cultism recorded 38 cases, leading to 59 arrests.
“Seventy-three vehicles were recovered from car theft cases, 24 from one-chance robbery cases, and two from cultism cases.
“From the above statistics, a 15.1% reduction in crime incidents within the FCT was recorded between 2023 and 2024. Additionally, 68 kidnapping victims and 19 one-chance robbery victims were rescued.
“Police officers who died in the line of duty: 140. Police misconduct: 68 cases reported to the command’s Complaint Response Unit, police misconduct: 58 suspects charged; no convictions recorded.”
It added:”Building on the successes of 2024, the command will intensify community policing engagements, intelligence-led policing strategies, targeted clearance operations, and public enlightenment initiatives to address the evolving security demands of the FCT.
“With a significant reduction in crime rates and a stable, peaceful atmosphere in the FCT, the command is committed to sustaining the momentum in combating criminal activities.”
