Dele Farotimi, a prominent Human Rights lawyer and activist, arrived at the Ekiti Magistrate Court on Friday morning, December 20, amidst tight security.

The court was set to deliver a ruling on his bail application, which was submitted by his legal team.

Persecondnews reports that Farotimi’s arrest stemmed from a petition filed by Chief Afe Babalola, who accused him of defamation in his book, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.”

He was arrested in Lagos on December 3 and taken to Ekiti State, where he was arraigned on defamation charges on December 4.

In a recent development, the court has granted Farotimi a bail of N30 million, with conditions that include two sureties, submission of his passport, and a prohibition on granting media interviews.

On Monday, December 9, Justice Babs Kuewumi of the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti granted Dele Farotimi N50 million bail with one surety in a suit filed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over alleged cybercrime.

On December 11, Justices Peter Kekemeke and Mufutau Adegbola of the High Courts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and Oyo State, respectively, issued interim orders halting the circulation of Dele Farotimi’s book and directing security agencies to seize all copies.
