Reprieve came for human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi on Monday as he was granted bail by an Ado Ekiti High Court over alleged defamatory publication.
Farotimi was granted bail in the sum of N50 million, with a surety in the same amount.
Persecondnews reported that elder statesman and legal icon, nonagenarian Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), accused Farotimi of defaming him in a book titled, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.”
The court ruled that the surety must possess a landed property.
Farotimi was hauled up to court by Babalola after he was arrested by operatives of the Ekiti State Police Command in Lagos and driven to Ekiti for arraignment.
The arrest had sparked outrage across the country, with civil society organizations and the Nigerian Bar Association calling for the activist’s release.
The case has been adjourned until January 29, 2025.
