President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Federal Ministry of Justice to collaborate with the National Assembly in addressing concerns raised by Nigerians regarding the new tax reform bills currently under consideration.
The directive underscores the administration’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity in advancing its fiscal reform agenda.
In a statement by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris, on Tuesday, the President welcomed the robust nationwide debate on the tax reform bills.
He described the widespread engagement as a testament to Nigeria’s vibrant democracy, urging commentators and stakeholders to maintain a respectful and constructive tone despite divergent opinions.
“Democracy thrives on informed engagement,” the minister said.
“However, this should be devoid of name-calling, ethnic bias, or regional slurs. The government remains committed to addressing all genuine concerns raised during this legislative process.”
Idris also debunked circulating misinformation about the reform agenda, noting that the proposed changes aim to benefit Nigerians without impoverishing any state or region.
He assured that the reforms will neither weaken federal agencies nor disrupt their operations.
According to the minister, the reforms are designed to provide significant relief to millions of Nigerians, devolving more resources to states and local governments to spur sustainable growth and development.
These efforts align with the administration’s vision of a democracy that prioritizes the well-being of the people.
The Tinubu administration has pledged to adopt measures that close loopholes and improve revenue collection without imposing additional tax burdens on citizens.
The fiscal reforms, alongside the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling on financial autonomy for local governments, are expected to empower grassroots governance, ensuring resources are managed more effectively.
“These reforms represent the most far-reaching and impactful fiscal policies Nigeria has seen in decades,” Idris stated.
“They will foster increased revenues, enhance accountability at all levels of government, and ensure that public resources are directed toward critical infrastructure and social investments.”
The minister reiterated that there is no hidden agenda or undue haste in passing the bills.
He noted that President Tinubu has tasked officials involved in drafting the bills to work closely with legislators to refine and address any ambiguities before they are passed.
Through this process, the administration aims to build a foundation for greater investment in healthcare, education, technology, and transportation while ensuring inclusive development.
The minister pointed out that the reforms align with the “Renewed Hope” agenda, promising a brighter future for all Nigerians.
