Tragedy has hit the Nigerian Navy as a naval officer, who was deployed to Forward Operating Base Dansadau for Operation FANSAN YAMMA, allegedly opened fire under questionable circumstances, leading to the death of a colleague.

The Defence headquarters confirmed this in a statement by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba.

The incident occurred early on Friday at about 3:12 a.m. in the Dansadau area of Katsina State.

The Naval officer, identified as Leading Seaman Akila A., has been arrested, disarmed, and detained.

According to him, an investigation has commenced, and the case will proceed to a standing court martial to address the alleged misconduct.

“The administrative process of notifying the deceased’s family is ongoing, which is why the name has not yet been released publicly. It will be disclosed in due course.

“We urge the media to exercise caution in their reporting to avoid adding to the family’s distress,” he said.
