NAFDAC workers embark on indefinite strike over promotion, welfare issues

335
The Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies (SSASCGOC), an affiliate of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has embarked on an indefinite strike to pressure authorities of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to accede to the demands of its workers.
Among the grievances are long-standing promotion disputes and welfare concerns.
The decision follows unsuccessful meetings with NAFDAC management, which failed to address critical staff concerns, according to Persecondnews.
The aggrieved workers said their grievances had not been addressed, prompting the drastic action.
The Secretary of TUC, Dr. Ejor Michael, said: “This decision is a result of NAFDAC Management’s failure to address the critical issues outlined in the communiqué within the given time frame.”
The workers outlined several key issues that remain unresolved in the communiqué they issued on October 4, 2024.
They include a review of the 2024 promotion examination results, the appointment of directors for public affairs and special duties, and training institute placements for Northwest and Northeast extractions.
The list of unresolved issues also includes the reform of the promotion examination content, the timely disclosure of APER/PER/KPI scores, the resolution of tied promotion examination scores, the qualification and conversion criteria for promotion examinations, and the creation of a psychology officer cadre in accordance with the HOS circular.
Relocation of the Danida Fellowship and centralization of training to the Personnel and Research Services (PRS), Payment of all pending burial expenses, life insurance, repatriation allowances, and salary arrears for employees from 2022 are among the demands.
The communiqué emphasized that the Congress, after thorough discussions, “unanimously resolved to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike across all NAFDAC formations, commencing Monday, 7th October 2024.”
It further directed all workers to withdraw their services in compliance with the strike action.
“In view of the foregoing, all staff are advised to remove their personal belongings from their offices, as no one, regardless of rank or cadre, will be allowed entry into any NAFDAC office during the strike period,” the statement said.
The SSASCGOC directed its state and zonal coordinators to ensure strict compliance with the indefinite strike directive.
