Police defy Kano Governor’s orders, refuse to evict deposed Emir Ado Bayero

Ado Bayero Gumel attributed the refusal to execute the order to "legal and procedural concerns," stressing the need to prioritize the maintenance of law and order in the state.

Kano State Police Commissioner Usaini Gumel has explained why the police were unable to carry out Governor Abba Yusuf’s order to evict the deposed Kano Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero.

Gumel attributed the refusal to execute the order to “legal and procedural concerns,” stressing the need to prioritize the maintenance of law and order in the state.

Persecondnews recalls that on Thursday night, Governor Abba Yusuf, through the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi, issued a directive to the Police Commissioner, ordering the removal of the deposed Emir from his current residence at the Nasarawa mini palace, where he has been staying since his deposition.

In a phone interview on Friday, Gumel explained that complying with the governor’s eviction order would be premature, as the state government has already filed a lawsuit related to the eviction in the State High Court, scheduled for hearing on Monday, June 24, 2024.

He considered it improper to act on the order before the court rules.

He said: “The police will not evict the deposed Emir because the same government has filed a case at the State High Court on the eviction order, which would come up on Monday, 24th June 2024.

“The government is jumping the gun because the same government has filed a case on the eviction order, which is coming up. So, if we carry out the order, it is like we are preempting the court because we don’t know what will happen at the court.”

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up around the Nasarawa mini palace in an apparent move to prevent any potential breach of peace or untoward incident in the wake of the ongoing eviction saga.

As of 11:30 am, there has been a significant increase in security presence, with additional personnel deployed to the area to supplement the existing forces.

Security personnel had cordoned off all four primary access routes to the mini palace.
