Kano State Police Commissioner Ussain Gumel has refuted claims that his officers showed partiality or took sides in the ongoing Emirate crisis, stating that the police remain impartial and committed to maintaining state law and order.
Persecondnews recalls that Sen. Umaru Musa Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria People’s Party’s (NNPP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government of bias and interference in the ongoing dispute over the Kano emirship, speaking out on Sunday.
Kwankwaso, during the inauguration of rural road networks in Madobi, accused security agencies of supporting deposed Emir Ado Bayero.
He warned that the people would resist any attempt to undermine the constituted authority, accusing the Federal Government of listening to the wrong people in its handling of the emirate issue.
During a phone call, Gumel said that the police force’s primary responsibility is to safeguard human life and property, and they remain dedicated to fulfilling this mandate in Kano State.
He said it was their duty to protect both emirs, “which is what we are still doing.”
Gumel stated that the police and other security agencies have maintained a neutral stance in the emirate crisis and revealed that they have received approximately five different court orders related to the ongoing dispute, which they are working to enforce impartially.
He said: “The issue is before the federal and state courts. We are waiting for judgment.
“We received about five court orders and forwarded them to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. We are waiting for his response and directives.
“And while awaiting the outcome in court or directives from the AGF, we must protect the contending emirs.
“We also have to protect the subjects of both emirs as well as residents of the state.
“My appeal to the public is for them to exercise patience and calm while we await the outcome from the relevant authorities.”
