The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has said that the removal of track fastening clips by vandals led to a “technical problem” on the Abuja-Kaduna train route on Wednesday evening.

Persecondnews recalls that on June 3, a train travelling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed at Asha station, leaving many passengers stranded in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Mr. Yakub Mahmood, the Deputy Director, Public Relations, condemned the vandalism in a statement on Thursday, noting that the agency is working to prevent such incident in the future.

He also announced the safe return of all train passengers to Abuja and the validity of their tickets for a future trip within two weeks.

The management of NRC also extended their apologies for the inconvenience caused and reaffirmed their dedication to prioritising the safety and well-being of their passengers.

He said, “This minor hitch is attributed to the removal of track fastening clips by vandals. However, the NRC management remains resolute towards ensuring the safety of our valued passengers in the entire system.

“For operational reasons, the first train from Kaduna (Rigasa) scheduled for 08.00 hours will be cancelled on Thursday 6th June, 2024 only, while all other train services will run as scheduled.

“NRC Management deeply regrets the inconveniences that this technical hitch might have caused our esteemed passengers.”
