Manchester City edge out wasteful Chelsea in FA Cup

Manchester City’s FA Cup title defence has taken them to another final after they beat Chelsea 1-0.

The defending champions weren’t at their best, with Pep Guardoila needing Silva to score the only goal in an end-to-end encounter in the 84th minute after Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic parried a shot from former Blues midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

The Wembley hullabaloo continues for Chelsea, with the Blues now losing 10 of their last 15 trips.

The right wing was the channel used by City to punish Chelsea. Malo Gusto had a game to forget as he was dribbled past five times, more times than any other player while he was on the pitch.

Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson was blunt on the final third; he missed a one-on-one in the first half, trying to go around Ortega but taking the ball too far.

A shot would have been better, and that drained all of his confidence. He missed two chances he should have scored in the opening stages of the second half, denied by Ortega each time.

Chelsea’s latest defeat means Mauricio Pochettino has lost every FA Cup semi-final that he has taken charge of during his managerial career.

On May 25, City will meet Manchester United or second-tier Coventry City, who play on Sunday, in the final.

Guardiola’s weary team found some solace in the result after Real Madrid eliminated them on penalties in the Champions League quarterfinals midweek.
