The Minister of Sport Development, Sen. John Enoh, has said all efforts are in full swing for an African country to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

The Minister said during an interactive session with sports journalists at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Tuesday that “it is a dark sport on the games that since the inception of the quadrennial multi-sport events in 1932, no African country has hosted.”

Enoh, in an exclusive chat with Persecondnews on the sidelines of the media briefing, said: “The next Commonwealth Games open for bidding is in 2030.

“Our concerns have been conveyed to the President of the Commonwealth Federation, Chris Jenkins. It’s a dark spot in the history of the games that no African country has been considered able enough to host.

“Concerning the infrastructural deficit in the sporting sector, that can be fixed if Nigeria is to host the games in 2030.

“We hosted one of the best All African Games in 2003; we also hosted the 18th Meeting of the Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Nations in Abuja, which was held from December 5-8, 2003.”

Nigeria made its debut in the Games in 1950, winning silver in the men’s high jump competition. Medal success has been achieved in every game that they have taken part in.

Team Nigeria won the most medals in the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games, which concluded on August 8 in Birmingham.

In the 1994 Victoria Games, the Nigerian team won 12 gold, nine silver, and 14 bronze medals. Women won all 12 gold medals.
