A bill proposing an amendment to the 1999 Constitution to establish state police has successfully passed the second reading in the House of Representatives during the Tuesday plenary session.

The bill was introduced by 13 members of the House and was widely supported by the majority of the lawmakers in the Green Chambers, who are of the opinion that concerns about political victimization by state governors should take the backseat to the current state of insecurity across the country.

Persecondnews recalls that to tackle headlong insecurity and the ongoing wanton killings across the country, President Bola Tinubu and the 36 state governors settled for the creation of state police.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris, said the President and the state governors are on the same page on the establishment of state police.

“More work needs to be done in that direction; a lot of meetings will have to happen between the federal government and the subnationals to evaluate the modalities for achieving this.”
