Nigerian striker Paul Onauchu has replaced Real Sociedad lanky and energetic striker, Sadiq Umar, who was ruled out of the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 squad due to a knee injury.

The former Almeria forward was involved in the two friendly games the Super Eagles played in preparation for the AFCON tournament, although he was taken off in the first half of the game against Guinea in what looked like a precautionary measure by Jose Peseiro’s medical crew.

The inclusion of Paul Onauchu was announced on the official X handle of the Super Eagles on Friday.

Onauchu has contributed 12 goals (9goals 3Assist) in the league for his club Trabzonspor of Belgium in 15 games.

For some football enthusiasts the addition of Onauchu will bring added firepower to the already depleted squad ravaged by injuries to Umar, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Victor Boniface.

Onuachu was at the AFCON 2019 finals in Egypt.

However, due to injury, the 29-year-old missed the previous competition in Cameroon.

The Super Eagles find themselves in a challenging group alongside Equatorial Guinea, hosts Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau.
