Tinubu reassures organized labour, says new minimum wage will be implemented in 2024

"It is in this spirit that we are going to implement a new national living wage for our industrious workers this New Year. It is not only good economics to do this, but it is also a morally and politically correct thing to do"

In a new year message to Nigerians, President Bola Tinubu on Monday raised the hope of Nigerian workers that his administration will implement a new national minimum wage this new year.

He, however, did not give a time frame for the implementation as part of efforts to alleviate the shocks and effect of the fuel subsidy removal announced at his inauguration on May 29, 2023.

Worried by the plights of Nigerians particularly workers, Tinubu promised that his administration would work diligently to make sure every Nigerian feels the impact of government.

“It is in this spirit that we are going to implement a new national living wage for our industrious workers this New Year.

‘It is not only good economics to do this, but it is also a morally and politically correct thing to do,” the president said in his first new year broadcast to the nation.

The economic aspirations and the material well-being of the poor, the most vulnerable and the working people shall not be neglected, Tinubu assured.

On fiscal and tax policies reforms of the government, President Tinubu said: “This administration will race against time to ensure that all the fiscal and tax policies reforms it needs to put in place are codified and simplified to ensure the business environment does not destroy value.”

“Nigeria is ready and open for business,” he said, pointing out that the foreign trips he had embarked on to woo investors and other business people to Nigeria are yielding fruits.

While pledging his renewed commitment to fight impediments to business competitiveness, Tinubu said Nigeria is on the path to becoming a destination of choice for local and foreign investments.

The president highlighted eight priority areas and focus in the 2024 Appropriation Bill of N28 trillion passed on Decent 30 by the National Assembly.

They include defence and internal security, job creation, macro-economic stability, investment environment optimization, human capital development, poverty reduction and social security.

“Because we take our development agenda very seriously, our 2024 budget reflects the premium we placed on achieving our governance objectives,” Persecondnews quotes President Tinubu as saying.
