The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Thursday mobilized their members for a protest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Abuja (NAIA).

Persecondnews reports that the protesters, who gathered at the airport as early as 9 a.m to enforce their directive to members working in the aviation sector to stop all flights to Owerri, the Imo state capital, had attempted to go into the airport, but were stopped by military personnel at the checkpoint.

As a result of the refusal, the protesters blocked the entry and exit point of the airport, causing heavy traffic of vehicles on both sides and thereby forcing travelers to make their way into the airport on foot.

Both labor unions had on Tuesday declared a nationwide strike which will commence on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, in protest against the brutalization of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, last week in Owerri.

In a strike notice to aviation workers on Wednesday, the labor bodies had ordered their members to withdraw services to all inwards and outwards Owerri flights.

They have also ordered the shutdown of essential services in Imo including electricity thereby throwing the state into darkness.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has deployed sensitive and non-sensitive materials for Saturday’s governorship poll in the state.

The off-season elections are also taking place in Bayelsa and Kogi states on Saturday, November 11.
