Nationwide strike: FG invites NLC, TUC to emergency meeting

1.5k

The Federal Government has invited the leaders of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) to an emergency meeting in a bid to stave off the nationwide indefinite strike scheduled to begin on October 3.
Persecondnews gathered that the meeting is scheduled for Friday evening at Aso Rock Villa, Conference Room of the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President.
The meeting is coming after the National Economic Council (NEC) had made a passionate appeal to the NLC and the TUC to shelve their plan to shut down the nation’s economy.
The unions resolved to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike beginning from October 3, 2023, following what they tagged as the “failure” of the government to successfully implement policies to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians, following the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
The President of NLC, Joe Ajaero and the TUC, Festus Osifo disclosed this after their separate emergency National Executive Council meetings in Abuja on Tuesday.
Among other things, both unions are asking for wage awards, implementation of palliatives, tax exemptions and allowances to public sector workers and a review of the minimum wage.
