In a bid to thwart the organized labour’s planned August 2 nationwide strike, yhe Senate at its plenary on Monday passed a motion to halt the call-out.

Moving the motion, Sen. Sulaiman Kawu (APC-Kano-South), said the nationwide strike is a threat to national security and that it will further weaken the nation’s economy.

Persecondnews reports that the motion is titled; “Urgent need to avert impending nationwide strike being called by the Nigeria Labour Congress over the removal of fuel subsidy”.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in a statement by the Assistant General Secretary, Chris Onyeka, had warned Nigerians to stock food in their houses and also be economical with their movements ahead of the strike.

NLC in ensuring that the industrial action is successful is mobilizing its affiliates unions for a total shut down of the economy.

Supporting the motion, Sen. Isah Jibrin urged NLC to shelve their scheduled strike, saying industrial action usually has “intended and unintended consequences both on the rich and the poor.

Towing the same line, PDP’s Sen. Seriake Dickson stressed the need for increased palliatives other than the N500 billion set aside to cushion the untold hardship faced by Nigerians as a result of petrol subsidy removal by the APC-led Federal Government.

Dickson said: “We must commend the President for having the courage to remove the fuel subsidy.

“The economic situation as a result of the removal has brought untold hardship on the people.

“Therefore, there is need for more palliatives other than the N500 billion already unveiled by the Federal Government.“
