Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, was on Friday sentenced to 10 years and 6 months

in jail by the Bailey Criminal Court for conspiring to traffic a young street trader from Nigeria to Britain to harvest his kidney for his daughter.

The judge said organ harvesting is a “despicable trade” and all the three defendants — Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice, and the Nigerian doctor, Obinna Obeta — were involved in the crime.

Counsel to Beatrice pointed out that she has already spent 200 days in custody, adding that any long sentence would have a “significant impact” on her daughter, Sonia, who already felt guilty for what has happened.

The judge, however, sentenced Beatrice to six years while Dr Obeta was jailed for 10 years.

More details shortly….
