In furtherance of its commitment to reduce carbon emission, the Lagos State Government says it has acquired the first set of electric buses.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said on Sunday that the acquisition of the electric buses would help to ease vehicular movement within the state and also provide a cost-efficient transportation system.

“This is in a bid to reduce carbon emission in Lagos State and also increase efficiency in the transport system in the state,” he announced.

The governor, who took to his official Twitter handle on Sunday to break the news, said the new electric buses can travel 280km at full charge, taking into account the unique travel times in Lagos.

Persecondnews reports that an electric bus is a vehicle that is propelled using electric motors as against an internal combustion engine.

They store the needed electricity on-board, or be fed continuously from an external source.

Sanwo-Olu, however, dispelled any fear that the buses can stop while in transit, saying charging stations to power the electric buses will be established across the state.

He said for constant supply of power to the buses, his administration has entered into a partnership with Oando Clean Energy Limited.

“We understand the need for charging stations to power our electric buses, which is why we are partnering with Oando Clean Energy Limited to strategically place Universal Chargers at public places like malls and gas stations.

“We also plan to establish an Assembly Plant for Electric Buses in the near future.

“This is just the beginning of our efforts to transform Lagos into an even smarter city as we continue to increase our fleet of electric vehicles, further modernizing the Lagos transportation system.
