FAAN Closes Runways At Murtala Muhammed International Airport

1.5k

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Monday closed the Runway 18R/36L at the Lagos, Murtala Muhammed International airport for maintenance.

Runway 18R/36L will be closed for a period of 8 weeks to undergo maintenance, while runway 18L/36R will remain open to full-flight operations. FAAN is requesting the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders toward achieving this fundamental safety objective.

The closure of the Lagos airport runway will most probably affect the flow of traffic and airline schedules. Aviation experts have said that the maintenance would increase airlines’ costs as they will burn more fuel and cause passenger delays.

For the next two months, a runway that was earlier used for lesser flights will take all passengers arriving and departing from Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The closed runway 18R/36L has a length of 3,900 m (12,794 ft) and a width of 60 m (197 ft), while the alternative runway 18L/36R has a length of 2,743 m (9,000 ft) and a width of 45 m (148 ft).

It will take longer for a flight to take off as there will be increased taxiing times and more frequencies on the shorter and narrower runway.
