At last, the troubled 16-year-old marriage of Kano Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje’s daughter, Asiya Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to her estranged husband, Inuwa Uba, has been dissolved.
A Sharia Court in Kano on Thursday declared the relationship extinct through Islamic means.
Asiya Ganduje had through her counsel, Mr Ibrahim Aliyu Nassarawa, approached the Kano State Upper Sharia Court, seeking the dissolution of her marriage on the grounds that she is fed up.
She also expressed her readiness to return the N50,000 received as dowry to her estranged husband.
However, the counsel to the respondent, Mr Umar I. Umar, said the claim of the plaintiff is beyond the issue of dowry alone and argued that Asiya had “seized” some properties belonging to the man including SUVs, cars and documents of some properties.
Earlier in his response on the point of law, Counsel to Asiya, told the court that the plaintiff will not “relinquish her rights for divorce”.
The counsel submitted that the plaintiff filed her claim for divorce alone.
Delivering his judgment, the judge, Mallam Abdullahi Haliru, said the evidence adduced during the cause of trial proved that the plaintiff received the sum of N50,000.
According to him, the court gave the judgment based on what is supposed to be the basis of the marriage which is the dowry.
He then ordered Asiya to return the N50,000 dowry.
In his address to the court after the judgment, the counsel to the respondent, Umar, urged the court to supply him with records of the proceedings and indicated his intention to approach the Upper Court to test the “analysis of the judgment”.
