Barely two days after the arrest of Nigeria’s first woman Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Patricia Olubunmi Etteh, for NDDC contract fraud, a former Managing Director of the commission, Mr Nsima Ekere, has been nabbed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Ekere, who hails from Akwa Ibom, was arrested on Wednesday by operatives of the commission in Abuja.
Ekere was the MD from November 2016 to 2018 and his appointment was terminated by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.
He is a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State.
Confirming the arrest, the spokesman for the Commission, Wilson Uwajaren, said Ekere is being accused of diverting N47 billion funds belonging to the interventionist agency through registered contractors.
He is still being grilled by EFCC officials at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja at the time of filing this report at 10.15pm.
