Two businesswomen, who allegedly repackaged industrial salt for human consumption, have been hauled up before a Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The accused, Ester Gberevbie, 55, and Ayoola Abdulkareem, 38, were alleged to have repackaged and rebranded the industrial salt into Dangote fine edible salt and sold them to the public for consumption.
The duo is facing a two-count charge of being in possession of and exposing for sale as food, industrial salt not fit for human consumption.
The Police Area ‘B’ Command, Apapa, which is prosecuting, told the court that the accused sent a driver, Gberevbie, to deliver 35 bags of the repackaged salt valued N122, 500 to Abdulkareem at Ijora Badia area of Apapa.
Unfortunately, he ran into a police team on a stop-and-search operation on Marine bridge, Apapa.

Gberevbie, from Edo State and Abdulkareem, who resides at Ireti Owoseni Street, Ijora Badia were charged before the Apapa Magistrate’s Court, Ajegunle, Lagos,.
The defendants committed the offences in February 2022 in Apapa, which contravened Sections 158 and 412 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Twonyiman told the Court that the first defendant, Gberevbie would purchase bags of industrial salt and go to Iddo area of Oyingbo, Lagos to purchase Dangote fine edible salt bags and repackaged the industrial salt into the Dangote fine edible salt bags and sell them to the second defendant, Abdulkareem and the public knowing well that the industrial salt is harmful for human consumption.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate A.O Olorunfemi granted them N50, 000 bail each with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case untill March 24, 2022 for mention.
He remanded the accused at the Kirikiri Correctional Facility pending the perfection of their bail conditions.
