DPO shot dead in Cross River State

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Obudu in Cross River State, Mr Gabriel Amawu, has been shot dead.

The DPO was reportedly shot when students of Federal College of Education in the area and some members of the public stormed the station to rescue some students arrested and detained at the station.
According to reports, some youths and students of the college were in orgy of celebration to mark the end of their examinations when the DPO, suspecting criminal activity, also stormed the venue to nake some arrests.
“It, however, degenerated into a protest by the students,” a source said.
During the protest, the DPO was shot, he said.

Police spokeswoman, DSP Irene Igbo confirmed that the “DPO was shot right in his office by people suspected to be students of Federal College of Education, Obudu”

Irene said some of the suspects are in police custody while the remains of Amawu have been evacuated.

Meanwhile,  a Senior Secondary School Student of Government Secondary School, Calabar Municipality local government area in Cross River State, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a colleague.

Witnesses said the suspected cultist brought out an axe and cut through his fellow student’s head during school hours yesterday causing pandemonium.

He was, however, caught and handed over to the Anti-cultism Unit of the Police in Calabar.

The State Special Adviser on Education, Mr Castro Ezama, who was in the school when the incident occurred, condemned the dastardly act.
