Smart Adeyemi kicks out Dino Melaye from senate, wins Kogi West senatorial rerun

  • The broom has swept away entire 16 senators, Adams mocks Dino

A one-time senator, Smart Adeyemi of the All progressives Congress (APC) has  romped to victory in the Kogi West rerun supplementary poll concluded on Saturday.

Adeyemi, a People’s Democratic Party senator until 2015, was sacked by his only rival, Dino Melaye of the PDP.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, Adeyemi polled a total of 88,373 votes to drown Melaye who polled 62,133 votes.
The Returning Officer, Prof. Olaide Lawal from Federal University, Oye Ekiti said the rerun was conducted because no clear winner emerged in the Nov. 16 senatorial eelection.
He said that the margin of win was less than the cancelled votes  which means, the election was inconclusive according to electoral laws.

Melaye who had  earlier  last week signified his intention to boycott the  supplimentary election, however, decided to participate.
But he rejected the results and indicated approaching the tribunal to seek redress.
He said: “What we have as result is fraud… a major fraud, the November 16 election was a fraud that would not stand.

“The supplementary election amounts to building something on nothing”.

Reacting to his defeat via his Twitter handle; @dino_melaye, Melaye wrote: “16 out of 24 units where supplementary election was conducted today in Kabba/Bunu LG has been cancelled. This speaks volume of the disaster called election. A situation where APC agents were the ones issuing INEC officials result sheets at the pooling units is phenomenal.”

In a statement by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, Congratulating Adeyemi over his electoral victory, Oshiomhole stated that the victory has again affirmed the general acceptance of the ruling party.

He stated: “I have always believed in the ability of the people of Kogi West to elect leaders who will make them proud in the Senate, and not the defeated Senator Melaye who is among the 16 Senators who rebelled against our party.”

“As it stands, the broom has swept away the entire 16 Senators, Dino Melaye being the last, who tried to destabilise our democracy for their personal interest, jettisoning the interest of the electorate.”
