Shiites protests: FEC directs FCT minister to take charge

The Federal Executive Council meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, has directed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Bello Mohammed, to take charge of the security operations to check the protests by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) his domain.

Briefing State House Correspondents after the FEC meeting, Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, disclosed that the violent clashes between Shi’ites members and security men in Abuja, was deliberated at the Council meeting.

The IMN had organised protests to demand for the release of its leader, Sheik El Zakzaky, who has been in federal government custody since 2015, when security forces raided his headquarters in Zaria, Kaduna State after their member blockaded a military convoy few days earlier.

The sect alleged that  42 of its members were killed after the Nigerian army fired live bullets and teargas to disperse their protests in the capital Abuja.

One police patrol vehicle was burnt during the clash on Tuesday.
