It was an extraordinary message, delivered at a time of unparalleled political drama.

On Tuesday, members of the ruling party in Lagos led by Central Senatorial District Leader of the party, Chief Tajudeen Olusi, has kicked against tenure elongation for National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and other national leaders, saying it is against the country’s and APC’s constitutions.

“We have taken reports of the state APC chairman in respect of the NEC meeting held in Abuja. We have also had the privilege of receiving great reports from our leader from the reconciliation committee, he said.

“We have considered the issue of extension of tenure and we are of the firm belief that the decision is a breach of the constitution of our party and of the country. We are against the elongation of tenure.

We shall continue to make our decision known to the party and to the president”. The tenure of Oyegun and its executives is due to expire in June this year.

With a year to the presidential elections the ruling APC Party is in a world of trouble. And the feud between former governor of Lagos state, Ahmed Bola Tinubu and party chairman John Oyegun may be merely a preview of worse to come.

Both major parties in Nigeria are in crisis, and I believe the reason is that the ground has shifted beneath them in ways they do not understand, said a Nigerian expert in Washington.

“Until the contours of the new political landscape become clear and the parties reshape themselves accordingly, I fear that chaos and turmoil will reign as the new normal.”
