Sprinting into a New Era: Nigeria to Host Historic Africa Running Conference

Nigeria is set to host the inaugural Africa Running Conference in Lagos, a move that is expected to promote health, fitness, and athletic excellence while driving increased participation, talent discovery, and private sector engagement.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) made the announcement on Tuesday at the World Athletics African Running Conference at the Media Centre of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

“This conference is a reflection of our vision, the vision of the NSC and that of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to create a thriving sports ecosystem where sport is not just for recreation, but becomes a significant driver of national economic development,” NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko said.

Dikko noted that road running represents a unique comparative advantage for Nigeria, with immense possibilities for growth and development.

“With the right focus and intentional development, the possibilities are immense,” he added.

The NSC chairman said the conference has generated excitement across the country, with every state eager to be involved.

“Every state now wants to be involved. This growing momentum tells us that Nigeria has what it takes to sustain and scale this movement,” Dikko said.

He expressed confidence that the conference will create followership, attract sponsorship, showcase Nigeria’s culture, and promote the country’s positive image globally.

NSC Director General Bukola Olopade expressed pride and gratitude in welcoming the global sports community to Nigeria.

“Today, my task is simple — to welcome you all. And I do so with a heart full of gratitude and excitement,” Olopade said.

He emphasized that the conference is a significant milestone, demonstrating President Tinubu’s vision to galvanize sport into an economic tool.

Olopade highlighted the broader impact of the event, saying, “This is the first of its kind in Nigeria and that speaks volumes. It shows that President Tinubu’s vision to galvanize sport into an economic tool is not just an idea; it’s already in motion.”

He said that the conference represents a holistic approach to nation-building through sport, encompassing health, education, and economic development.

Alessio Punzi, Head of Running and Mass Participation at World Athletics, reaffirmed the organization’s strong backing for the inaugural Africa Running Conference in Lagos.

“The conference is more than just hosting another international event. It represents a strategic move toward building a full ecosystem around road running in Africa,” Punzi said.

He disclosed that the conference will feature technical workshops for national athletics federations across Africa, focusing on standardization, certification, and officiating.

Punzi noted that the Africa Running Conference is a statement of intent, a call to action, and a celebration of the growing synergy between sport, health, education, and economic development in Nigeria.

The conference is expected to attract athletes, coaches, and sports administrators from across the continent, providing a platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and collaboration.
