Hangman’s Noose Awaits 22-Year-Old in Double Murder Case, Strangling, Stabbing Stepmother, Sister

Convicted of fatally stabbing his stepmother, Rabiatu Sagir, in the neck with a screwdriver and strangling his sister, Munawara, with her scarf following a dispute, 22-year-old Sagiru Rijiyar-Zaki has been sentenced to death by hanging.

Persecondnews reports that by Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu of the Kano High Court handed down the verdict on Tuesday.

Rijiyar-Zaki, a resident of Kutama Village in Kano’s Gwarzo council area, was found guilty of culpable homicide.

Delivering his judgment, Justice Adamu-Aliyu held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and therefore, sentenced the man to death by hanging.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr. Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the convict committed the offence on January 7, 2023, at Rijiyar Zaki Quarters in Kano.

The prosecutor had established his case against the defendant by presenting two witnesses and exhibits, but the convict denied the charges.

According to Abba-Sorondinki, the offences contravene the provisions of Section 221(a) of the Penal Code Law of Kano State, 1991.

The Defence Counsel, Mr. Mubarak Abubakar, had during the trial presented the convict as the sole defence witness.
