Banji Lawal takes helm as Southwest Police DIG

The Police Service Commission(PSC) has approved the appointment of Banji Lawal as the substantive Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police representing the Southwest zone.

Prior to his posting, Lawal was the Assistant Inspector General(AIG) in charge of Border Patrol at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Ikechuchu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations at the Commission, made the announcement in a statement he released on Friday in Abuja.

He stated that Lawal took over from Sylvester Alabi, the former DIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, who retired on December 31, 2024.

According to Ani, the PSC Chairman, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu extended his warm congratulations to Lawal on his well-deserved promotion, and encouraged him to excel in his new role, becoming an invaluable asset to the Police Management Team.

The statement said: “The new DIG, Lawal, appeared before the Commission in plenary on Friday.

“Present at the session were Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd), Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, retired Justice of the Supreme Court, and DIG Taiwo Lakanu (Rtd), FDC.

“He underwent written and oral examinations, during which he particularly praised the Community Policing programme of the Nigeria Police Force, which he described as successful and impactful.

“The new DIG has an extensive career in the Nigeria Police Force, having served as the former Commandant of the Police Training College in Ikeja, Lagos; Assistant Commissioner of Operations in Ekiti, Abia, and Edo States; Area Commander in Uyo; Deputy Commissioner of Operations in Nasarawa and Akwa Ibom States; and Deputy Commissioner of Finance and Administration at the ICT Force Headquarters in Abuja.

“He has also served as Deputy Commissioner and Deputy Registrar at the Central Criminal Registry (CCR), Force Headquarters Annex, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi; DCP Finance and Administration in Benue State; Deputy Commandant of the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano; and CP General Investigation at the Force CID.”
