Following allegations of posting false claims about Gov. Ahmad Aliyu and his wife on social media, a Sokoto State Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of Shafi’u Umar-Tureta in a correctional facility (prison).

Tureta previously served as a Special Assistant to ex-Gov. Aminu Tambuwal.

Persecondnews reports that the case first came before the court on August 26, 2024, when Inspector Abdurahman Mansur, the prosecutor, contended that the defendant’s alleged actions violated the Penal Code Law.

Abdurahman said: “The accused person circulated a video of the governor’s wife, Hajia Fatima Aliyu, spreading money on the ground during her birthday.

“He also shared a document that indicated Gov. Aliyu had failed his Senior Secondary School Examination, scored F9, and is incapable of speaking English.”

Abubakar urged the magistrate to fix the case for a definite hearing, arguing that the prosecution should not be hiding under the guise of investigation.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Fatima Hassan noted that only the First Information Report (FIR) was available, and due to the severity of the charges, the defence counsel was required to file a formal application for bail on behalf of the accused.

She postponed the case for a hearing until September 18, 2024, and instructed that the accused be held in custody at a correctional facility until then.
