For the umpteenth time, national grid collapses, plunging nation into darkness

For the seventh time this year, Nigeria’s electricity grid collapsed again on Monday at 1:33 p.m., with the total generation on the grid reading 00:00:00.

The total system collapse, which led to a total blackout in most parts of the country, is the seventh in 2024.

Persecondnews recalls that on July 6, 2024, a grid failure was reported.

The Independent System Operators website reports that the 22 generation companies peaked at 4,067.77 MW, declined to 823.5 MW, and finally dropped to 0.00.

Electricity generated by Afam IV & V reached the highest at 72.10 MW and dropped to 0.00, Afam VI reached 382 MW before dropping to 0.00, Azura-Edo IPP reached 419 MW before dropping to 0.00, Dadinkowa generated 36.24 MW and dropped to 0.00.

Electricity generated by the Delta generation company reached 359 MW before dropping to 0.00, Egbin Genco reached 222 MW before dropping to 0.00, Geregu (gas) was 85 MW before dropping to 0.00, Geregu NIPP was 100 MW, Ibom Power reached 68 MW, and Ihovbor was 103 MW before the drop to 0.00.

Shiroro (Hydro) GenCo generated 340 MW before the drop to 0.00, Sapele (steam) generated 72 MW before dropping to 0.00, Rivers IPP generated 146 MW before the drop, Paras Energy (gas) generated 65 MW, and Omotosho and Omuku both generated 137 MW and 74 MW before the system collapsed.

Also, Jebba (hydro), Kainji (hydro), Odukpani NIPP (gas), Okpai (gas/steam), Olorunsogo (gas), and Olorunsogo NIPP (gas) generated 366 MW, 240 MW, 77 MW, 238 MW, 190 MW, and 105.80 MW, respectively, before it plummeted to 0.00.
