Presidential tussle: Atiku/Obi vs Tinubu: Supreme Court reserves judgment

…strikes out APM’s appeal

After listening to submissions by the various counsel, the Supreme Court on Monday reserved judgment in the appeal by PDP’s Presidential Candidate Atiku Abubakar and his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi, in the February 25 poll, challenging the victory of President Bola Tinubu.

Both candidates and their parties have appealed the judgment of the Presidential Election Petitions Court which affirmed Tinubu’s victory.

Persecondnews reports that the apex court’s seven-man panel led by Justice John Inyang Okoro, after listening to the submissions of all parties involved in the cases, announced that the judgment date would be communicated to them.

The court, however, dismissed the appeal by the Allied People’s Movement (APM) over what it called lack of prayers for determination.

The apex court also took arguments from lawyers to parties on the motion filed by Atiku to supply fresh evidence on alleged forged documents by President Tinubu.

Counsel to Atiku Abubakar, Mr Chris Uche (SAN), urged the court to grant the motion and allow their appeal, grant the prayers sought, and disqualify Tinubu.

But counsel to the Respondents — Mr Abubakar Mahmoud for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) for President Tinubu, and Mr Akin Olujinmi ( SAN) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) — were unanimous in asking the court to dismiss both the motion and appeal for lacking in merit.
