Feb. 25 polls: INEC Chairman vows to punish officials involved in electoral malpractice

706

Eight days after the alleged flawed polls of February 25, the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood
Yakubu has finally broken his silence over officials’ malfeasance and vowed to discipline them appropriately.

He said ad-hoc or collation staff found wanting in the Presidential and National Assembly Elections would also not be spared.

Yakubu said this at a meeting with the Residents Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja on Saturday.

All officials who might have compromised the standards set by INEC shouldn’t be involved in the forthcoming state elections, he said.

“As we approach the Governorship and State Assembly elections, we must work harder to overcome the challenges experienced in the last election. Nothing else will be acceptable to Nigerians.

“All staff found to be negligent, whether they are regular or ad hoc officials, including Collation and Returning Officers, must not be involved in forthcoming elections,” Persecondnews quotes INEC boss as saying.

“RECs must also immediately initiate disciplinary action where prima facie evidence of wrongdoing has been established.”
