Former Governor of Anambra and presidential aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Peter Obi, has officially joined the Labour Party  barely a week after defected from PDP.

Obi who is expected to contest the presidential primary on the platform of his new party, made the announcement via his Twitter handle @PeterObi on Friday.

“I thank all Nigerians, especially our youths who have joined me in the mission of taking back and reuniting Nigeria.

“This project is yours and for the future of your children. I am just a facilitator.

“Since I resigned from the PDP because of issues that are at variance with my persona and principles, I have consulted widely with various parties and personalities to ensure we do not complicate the route to our desired destination.

“For me, the process of achieving our goal is as fundamental as what one will do thereafter.

“Therefore, I have chosen a route that I consider to be in line with our aspirations and my mantra of taking the country from consumption to production; and that is the Labour Party which is synonymous with the people, workers, development, production, securing and uniting Nigerians as one family.

“I invite all Nigerians to join me in taking back our country. Be assured that I’ll never let you down,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Labour Party has also confirmed Obi’s membership via party’s Twitter handle saying: “As earlier reported, H.E Peter Obi Joins Labour Party of Nigeria, @PeterObi registered as a member of the party on Friday in his ward in Anambra State.

“He is expected to pick the presidential form and contest the party’s presidential primary election next Tuesday.”

Persecondnews had earlier reported that Obi, the Vice-Presidential candidate to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 polls, had dumped the PDP during the week.

The Director-General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Organisation, Dr. Doyin Okupe, made this public after submitting a copy of Obi’s resignation letter addressed to the National Chairman at the PDP National Secretariat, Abuja, on Wednesday.

According to Obi, “happenings” within the party currently do not give him the space to fully express himself.
