After 90 days “warning” strike, ASUU declares another 12 weeks

The industrial crisis rocking the nation’s ivory towers may be far from over as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday extended its 90-day strike by another 12 weeks, ending in July.

ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, who confirmed this in Abuja, said the strike was extended following the federal government’s failure to keep to agreements reached with them.

The ASUU President, who  featured on Raypower FM Network political platform programme on Monday, accused the Minister of Labour and Employment of stopping members’ salaries, but approved payment for other unions in the university, who are also on strike.

“ASUU is extending its action because government has refused to addressed its demands,” Persecondnews which monitored the interview, quotes Osodeke as saying.

The Minister of State for Education, Chief Emeka Nwajuiba, had earlier said it did not make sense for lecturers to continue to receive salaries without working.

Meanwhile, students of the various universities under the umbrella of National Association of Nigerian Students have announced plans to stage protests in major cities in the country to express their aversion to the unresolved dispute between ASUU and the government.

They have also warned both APC and PDP not to hold their presidential primaries in Abuja if the issues with university lecturers were not resolved.

Persecondnews recalls that in 2020, ASUU was on strike for more than eight months.
