Power Minister Joseph Tegbe has unveiled plans to prioritise three economic energy corridors across Nigeria as part of efforts to improve electricity delivery, strengthen transmission infrastructure and support industrial growth.

The corridors are Lagos–Ogun, Benin–Enugu–Port Harcourt and Abuja–Kaduna–Kano, which the minister said would help align power generation, transmission capacity, distribution readiness and electricity demand.

Tegbe spoke at the opening of the Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit 2026 at the Landmark Centre, Lagos, where he called for a shift from designing power sector reforms to delivering measurable improvements in electricity supply and system performance.

PerSecondNews reports that the summit, themed “Strengthening Power Delivery Through Execution, Coordination and Performance,” brought together energy companies, technology providers and other industry stakeholders to discuss challenges and investment opportunities across the sector.

The minister identified gas supply constraints, overstretched transmission infrastructure, distribution losses and accumulated sector liabilities as major obstacles to reliable electricity supply.

He outlined four priorities for the sector: enhancing energy zones, strengthening liquidity and financial sustainability, optimising existing assets, and expanding infrastructure to meet future demand.

On the sector’s financial challenges, Tegbe said the government had paid ₦1.23 trillion out of an estimated ₦3.3 trillion in legacy liabilities, while taking steps to block financial leakages and prevent new debts from accumulating.

He also highlighted the continued implementation of the Presidential Metering Initiative, the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme and the Meter Acquisition Fund as measures to improve metering, reduce technical and commercial losses, and strengthen the financial sustainability of electricity distribution.

Tegbe said existing power sector assets must be used more efficiently, alongside investments in new infrastructure to meet growing demand.

He said the reforms, aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, must translate into tangible benefits, including stronger industrial productivity, business expansion, increased investment and job creation.

The Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit and Exhibition 2026 runs from October 27 to 29.
